Chairman Presides at World LP Gas Forum |
LPG has a great future, particularly in countries that rely on unsustainable biomass use for their daily energy use, said Mr. Sarthak Behuria, Chairman, IndianOil and Chairman, PetroFed while presiding at the 22nd General Assembly of the World LP Gas Association at Rio de Janeiro during October, 2009. Mr. Behuria is the first Asian to take over as the President of the World LP Gas Association which has 175 members in 90 countries.
At the inaugural session of the forum on October 8, 2009, which was graced, amongst others, by the Governor of the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Mr. Sergio Cabral, Mr. Behuria sought the active support of the audience for the working groups on auto gas, climate change and technology.
During the first Session on ‘Navigating the Future: LP Gas Industry Leaders’ Visions’ Mr. Behuria forecast a rapid growth in energy demand from China and India requiring an investment of USD 26 trillion. The presence of 70% proven reserves in just seven countries presented an increased geopolitical risk, he added. Mr. Behuria highlighted the challenge in India where an increase in rural supply will see 60 million new consumers in the next five years.
A presentation was made in the second Session on ‘India: A Driver for Asian LP Gas Demand Growth’ by Mr. Alok Gupta, Chief Manager (Business Development) of the LPG SBU of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited in the absence of the CMD, Mr. Arun Balakrishnan. Mr. Apurva Chandra, Joint Secretary, MoP&NG made a presentation in Session IV on ‘Rural Demand in India: Satisfying an Enormous Growth Potential’. A presentation was also made in Session V by Mr. S. Radhakrishnan, Director (Mktg.), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited on ‘Distribution Model: The Full LP Gas Chain from Distributor to the End Consumer’. The conference was attended by Mr. Y. Sahai, Director (Comm. & Mktg.), PetroFed as a member of the Committee on Global Autogas Industry Network. Mr. Mrinal Roy, ED (LPG), IndianOil attended the industry Council Meeting.
