Address by UOP President

Taking advantage of the brief visit to India of Dr. Rajeev Gautam, President & CEO, UOP, LLC, USA a guest lecture by him was organized by PetroFed on 'Managing Near-term Issues for Long-term Success in Petroleum & Petrochemicals' at New Delhi on November 19, 2009 in association with the Lovraj Kumar Memorial Trust.

Chairing the session Mr. Sarthak Behuria, Chairman, IndianOil and Chairman, PetroFed drew attention to the paradox of purpose for developing economies with low levels of emissions which need larger amount of energy for their development that may have to be at the cost of emissions unless appropriate technologies are imbibed. The global concerns on climate change, he said, inhibit prolific energy usage though by 2030 crude oil demand is expected to top 105 million barrels a day as compared to less than 85 mbd currently.

Dr. Gautam, who has been with UOP for more than 30 years and is an internationally recognized expert on refining, petrochemical technology, addressed the challenges of price volatility and declining quality of crude, changing product slates, declining demand, regulatory uncertainty besides other feed stock availability.  The global products balance shifts, he said, would need retooling of refineries and that technology will be the key in the future where breakthroughs are needed. Coal to liquids and chemicals is an opportunity which can be exploited by countries with large coal reserves. India, he said, can follow the example of China in this regard.

A Chemical Engineer from IIT, Kanpur, a Masters in Chemical Engineering from Drexel University, a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania, and an MBA from the University of Chicago, Dr. Rajeev Gautam has championed innovative solutions to refining, petrochemical and gas processing industry needs.

An extended Q&A session signified the keen interest generated by his lecture.

A vote of thanks was proposed by Mr. J. P. Kapur, Trustee, Lovraj Kumar Memorial Trust.
